New Zetasizer Nano ZSP offers emerging rheology technique for weakly structured fluids
With the recent launch of the new top of the range Zetasizer Nano ZSP system, Malvern Instruments has added dynamic light scattering (DLS) Microrheology to its portfolio of materials characterization techniques. To introduce this powerful technique, the company has published an in-depth paper that explains the background to microrheology, and how it can be used to investigate the rheological properties of even the most weakly structured fluids, using sample volumes on the microliter scale. ‘An Introduction to DLS Microrheology’ includes data for protein (bovine serum albumin (BSA)) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) solutions that illustrate the significance and usefulness of the method. It is freely available from the Malvern website.

The 15th European Microscopy Congress – emc2012 - held at Manchester Central in September, was the largest yet in the series. It attracted 1,714 registered Conference Delegates. This is a 30% increase on 2008
The record breaking numbers were drawn by eight parallel conference sessions that embraced the life and physical sciences, and delivered a balanced programme of optical and electron microscopy. This breadth made emc2012 the most inclusive event yet. Professor Tony Wilson, President of the Royal Microscopical Society and Vice Chair of the Congress, said, “The conference sessions have provided an unparalleled opportunity for delegates to immerse themselves in their own area of interest, and also to witness new techniques and tools that might benefit their current work, or feature in their future activities.”...
Read MoreAre exacerbations the most relevant outcome parameters in COPD clinical trials?Oct 5, 2012
COPD is a life threatening disease which negatively affects normal breathing. It is characterised by persistent blockage of air flow to the lungs. COPD encapsulates chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The most common cause of patients getting COPD is tobacco smoke. This is either from smoking or from second hand smoke
As science evolves, new technologies and methods are continuously created that supplant older, outdated methods. The main reasons to replace outdated applications are: to save money, to save time, and to be safer. If a new application can do all three, its chance of successfully replacing an older technology greatly increases
In the last decade, the microplate reader has become a multi-mode, multi-functional instrument that is used routinely in most laboratories. As such, the number and type of microplate based applications have grown tremendously. A number of these applications use the Fluorescence Intensity, Fluorescence Polarization or Time-Resolved Fluorescence detection mode in a microplate reader....
