High-performance range of MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometers offers new compact alternative

Shimadzu, a global leader in analytical instrumentation, has announced the release of the MALDI-8030. The new instrument offers a versatile, space-saving, easy-to-use, high-performance alternative, and expands the range of solutions offered by Shimadzu's industry-standard family of benchtop matrix-assisted laser-desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometers.

VERSATILITY

Similar to the top-of-class MALDI-8020, the new MALDI-8030 uses the same innovative and award-winning sleek instrument design to produce a compact footprint, while still achieving performance specifications similar to larger, more expensive MALDI-TOF models. The added feature of a dual-polarity ion source provides further versatility to users who wish to analyze molecules in both positive and negative ion mode.

USER-CENTRIC DESIGN

Based on a user-centric concept, the MALDI-8030 is remarkably easy to use. Intuitive, built-in MALDI Solutions software caters to both advanced and novice users alike. The multi-LED front panel keeps users accurately informed of instrument status, and the instrument operates at a comfortably quiet level of sound (< 55 dB).

SPEED

The Fast-MS design combines a lively solid-state laser (200 Hz) with quick sample stage movement, a high-speed transient recorder for rapid data transfer, and a load-lock system for swift sample target introduction. This impressive array of attributes accelerates time-to-results turnover and improves laboratory productivity.

SENSITIVITY

The dual-polarity ion source and the patented WideBoreTM ion optics provide top-level sensitivity and mass resolution, enabling low-level detection of proteins, peptides and polymers, among other analytes, in either positive or negative ion mode.

PERFORMANCE

Designed as a true laboratory workhorse, the MALDI-8030 also facilitates routine maintenance and maximizes instrument up-time with the use of the patented TrueCleanTM function, which performs automated UV laser self-cleaning of the ion optics. The absence of desiccant and use of an oil-free diaphragm pump reduce maintenance costs. In addition, the MALDI laser has an impressively class-leading lifetime of 2 billion shots.

With its outstanding functionality, routine workflows for academic, QC and regulatory laboratories are all executed smoothly on the new MALDI-8030.  The integrated barcode scanner enables a seamless tracking process from loading samples to obtaining results. Additionally, the popular MALDI Solutions software offers high-level data security to help meet 21 CFR Part 11 compliance, including password-controlled user access.

Commenting on the release of the new MALDI-8030, Mr. Kozo Shimazu, Managing Director of Kratos Analytical (a wholly owned subsidiary of Shimadzu Corporation), said, “I am very proud to announce the launch of the MALDI-8030. Kratos Analytical has a long history of ‘firsts’ with MALDI-TOF technology, going back 30 years to when we released the world’s first benchtop with the ‘KOMPACT MALDI’ benchtop instruments. The MALDI-8020 is a best-in-class positive ion mode linear MALDI-TOF benchtop, and we have listened to our customers’ needs and are now providing negative ion mode analysis in the same small form format. Both the MALDI-8020 and the new MALDI-8030 offer excellent performance, so our customers will continue to have speed with accuracy, and can now also have that in a compact and economical package.”

The MALDI-8030 was first previewed in November 2021 at the Japan Analytical & Scientific Instruments Show (JASIS) in Tokyo, Japan. Its release further consolidates Shimadzu’s status as a thought leader in this market segment.
