New Zetasizer Nano ZSP offers emerging rheology technique for weakly structured fluids
With the recent launch of the new top of the range Zetasizer Nano ZSP system, Malvern Instruments has added dynamic light scattering (DLS) Microrheology to its portfolio of materials characterization techniques. To introduce this powerful technique, the company has published an in-depth paper that explains the background to microrheology, and how it can be used to investigate the rheological properties of even the most weakly structured fluids, using sample volumes on the microliter scale. ‘An Introduction to DLS Microrheology’ includes data for protein (bovine serum albumin (BSA)) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) solutions that illustrate the significance and usefulness of the method. It is freely available from the Malvern website.
As science evolves, new technologies and methods are continuously created that supplant older, outdated methods. The main reasons to replace outdated applications are: to save money, to save time, and to be safer. If a new application can do all three, its chance of successfully replacing an older technology greatly increases
In the last decade, the microplate reader has become a multi-mode, multi-functional instrument that is used routinely in most laboratories. As such, the number and type of microplate based applications have grown tremendously. A number of these applications use the Fluorescence Intensity, Fluorescence Polarization or Time-Resolved Fluorescence detection mode in a microplate reader....
Read More'Ethanol Production by Dry Milling' - New Case Study from Cole ParmerAug 20, 2012 Cole-Parmer's Masterflex® provides accurate and repeatable pumping solution for ethanol production process, enabling precise volume of enzymes to be added continuously.
Ethanol is a versatile alcohol that is used in fuel, beverages and thermometers. Two processes utilized to produce ethanol from grain are dry milling and wet milling. Dry milling plants generate ethanol, carbon dioxide, and distillers' grain, which is used as a high-protein livestock feed supplement. Wet milling plants create these and additional valuable byproducts such as corn syrup, dextrose, and fructose, however they cost substantially more to build and operate than a dry milling plant...

Read MoreImproved cryopreservation of human hepatocytesAug 13, 2012A recently published article from researchers at the Karolinska Institute details an improved protocol for cryopreservation of primary human hepatocyte using STEM-CELLBANKER® cryopreservation solution from AMSBIO.
In the article the authors compare cryopreservation of liver hepatocytes using STEM-CELLBANKER with the frequently used DMSO-University of Wisconsin (DMSO-UW) medium protocol. Both protocols yielded hepatocytes with good P450 function, however, the STEM-CELLBANKER protocol gave a higher viability than the DMSO-UW cryoprotectant. The researchers concluded that STEM-CELLBANKER beneficially is also xeno-free and will be applicable to cryopreservation of clinical-grade primary human hepatocytes...
