Researchers at the University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht, the Netherlands, have identified a novel gene mutation that predisposes to seminoma, the most common form of testicular cancer in young men
The newly identified mutation, in the LRRC50 gene, can be considered as a new risk factor for testicular cancer and may be useful for screening purposes. The finding was published this week in PLoS Genetics. In preclinical research in zebrafish, it was found that mutation in the LRRC50 gene predisposes to testicular tumor formation and that zebrafish LRRC50 tumors are similar to human seminoma. These unique findings make zebrafish a useful animal model for human seminoma associated with mutation of the LRRC50 gene...

The organizers of both events were pleased with their first-year success and are looking forward to expanding the relationship....
Every forensic laboratory contains a number of optical and digital microscopes. This is one of the primary requirements when setting up a forensic laboratory to perform routine imaging tasks. In general, these optical devices are robust and easy to operate. However the demand for magnifications beyond the optical range (>1000x) is increasing as the features of interest become smaller. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) can go beyond the optical scale with very high magnifications and depth of focus....
RSA (Reduced Surface Activity) Glass vials are produced by a revolutionary new patent pending production process that virtually eliminates all silanols and produces glass which has a greatly reduced surface activity for basic compounds
RSA Glass vials are not coated or silanized. The lack of surface silanols make RSA Glass vials an excellent choice for many applications. If you are working with sensitive compounds commonly found in natural products, biological samples or chemical synthesis, the glass wall of your vial could be a problem for basic compounds. With RSA Glass vials this problem is eliminated....

Thermo Fisher Scientific has developed an efficient high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the sensitive determination of nine phenylurea compounds in drinking water and commercial bottled beverages with method detection limits that meet those reported in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Method 532 and concentration limits set in the European Commission’s Council Directive 98/83/EC
Application Note (AN) 1046: Determination of Phenylurea Compounds in Tap Water and Bottled Green Tea demonstrates that use of on-line solid-phase extraction(SPE) and ultraviolet detection eliminates the need for expensive and time-consuming off-line SPE. Phenylurea compounds are widely used as agricultural pesticides. Due to their slow degradation, they are frequently detected in surface waters at concentrations above 0.1 μg/L, which is higher than the European Commission’s drinking water limit often used as a quality standard for natural water...

A new white paper, available from AMSBIO, discusses the latest developments in extracellular matrix (ECM) and the opportunities they offer in cancer research
At least 80% of cancers are carcinomas, or tumours of the epithelia. Traditionally, cell transformation to a cancerous stage has been evaluated by anchorage dependent growth. More recently, the role of the extracellular matrix, already established in normal epithelial biology, has come to the fore in the study of carcinomas. The extracellular matrix is largely composed of several protein families, notably laminins, collagens and fibronectin. AMSBIO's new white paper focuses on ECM proteins most relevant to cancer research and their use in the oncology field...
