Providing 9-11-year-old children with a unique opportunity to experience an exciting high-tech manufacturing environment

CCI programme Sartorius Stedim Biotech (SSB) is delighted to announce that its Royston site has joined the Children Challenging Industry (CCI programme) and is offering primary and middle schools an on-site workshop and learning resources for 9-11-year-old children.

Sartorius Stedim Biotech in Royston is only the second company in the south of England to join the CCI programme, which has been successfully running in the north of England since 1996. The CCI programme supports teaching of the science curriculum, whilst improving children’s perceptions of science-based manufacturing, and its relationship with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) based careers.

Schools in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Hertfordshire are being invited to take part in this exciting initiative, with programmes available for this Summer Term, as well as for 2016/17 academic year. Teachers that would like to find out more should contact Claire Seeley, Primary Science Advisory Teacher on ciec@york.ac.uk or 01904 322523.

The CCI programme provides classroom-based development for one Year 5-6 teacher, plus their class. This includes a site visit to Sartorius Stedim Biotech in Royston where children will receive a hands-on experience of computer aided design, assembling parts for use in manufacturing and testing components, showing them how science can be used within an industrial context.

Nick Cooke, Managing Director at Sartorius Stedim Biotech in Royston commented: “We’re proud to be part of this excellent initiative to introduce children to the exciting world of science and engineering. Primary schools which take part in the CCI programme will be inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists by allowing them to experience how they can apply what they learn at school into real-life biotech manufacturing.”
