 covid19-and-beyond

MWE are a UK manufacturer & have been leaders in preanalytical medical devices since 1952.  Throughout 2020, 2021 and into 2022 we continue to help the UK government in the battle against COVID–19.  Three of our main products used for COVID–19 are: Σ–MM™, ∑–VCM™ and Σ–VIROCULT®.

 Σ–MM™

Inactivates SARS–CoV–2 in 60 seconds

Designed and manufactured in the UK, Σ–MM™ solution rapidly kills all microorganisms, including bacteria, mycobacteria and viruses, rendering specimens safe for transport, whilst preserving and stabilizing RNA/DNA for accurate molecular analysis across diagnostic platforms.

Key Benefits

  • Inactivates SARS–CoV–2 in 60 seconds
  • Rapidly kills all microorganisms, including bacteria, mycobacteria and viruses
  • Suitable for highly infectious clinical specimens
  • DNases and RNases inactivated
  • DNA and RNA preserved for molecular testing
  • Can be used with any swab
  • Powerful reagents kill deadly pathogens quickly
  • Safe and stable for transport at ambient temperature

The Σ–MM™ device is a highly effective single step collection. The medium disturbs and lyses lipid membranes, destroys proteins including DNase and RNase, leaving stable intact DNA or RNA.  Specimens collected into Σ–MM™ can be transported at ambient temperatures, no freezing or refrigeration is required.  Specimens can be collected using any microbiology swabs, including MWE Transwab® and all MWE Dryswab™ products.

∑–VCM™

For Viruses, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma and Ureaplasmas

∑–VCM™ incorporates our universal transport medium specially formulated for the collection and transport of Viruses, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma and Ureaplasmas.

Key Benefits

  • Compatible with molecular & cell culture techniques
  • Single medium for urogenital specimens
  • Liquid phase ideal for multiple aliquoting
  • Recovers viruses, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasmas, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • Suitable for molecular and conventional techniques including cell culture

Retaining well documented qualities of VIROCULT® medium, which is M40–A2 Compliant, ∑–VCM™ has been developed as a universal, multipurpose system for use with Viruses, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma and Ureaplasmas and even certain fastidious bacteria such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The base medium allows survival and recovery of the target organisms, while a new cocktail of antimicrobials prevents the growth of contaminating bacteria and fungi in the specimen.

Σ–VIROCULT®

For Virus Isolation and Identification

Viral transport medium: ∑–VIROCULT® is a combined collection and transport systems for viruses, incorporating a specially formulated liquid transport medium, which is fully M40–A2 Compliant.

Key Benefits

  • Compatible with molecular and cell culture techniques
  • Liquid VIROCULT® medium for ease of processing
  • Foam swab with integral swab capture
  • Optimum recovery of viruses at ambient and refrigerated conditions
  • Liquid phase ready for multiple aliquoting
  • Ideal for molecular and cell culture systems

∑–VIROCULT® has long been recognised as one of the leading transport devices for viruses, demonstrating survival of many types of viruses at ambient temperatures, including Herpes Simplex Virus, Varicella–Zoster Virus, Influenza Type A (includes Novel H1N1v, H5N1, and H3N2), Influenza Type B, Respiratory syncytial virus, mumps virus, adenovirus, rhinovirus, and enteroviruses.
