Scientists and students in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina will have new opportunities to attend presentations by leading analytical chemistry authorities, thanks to an endowment established by Thermo Fisher Scientific in the College of Sciences at North Carolina State University.

North Carolina State University is part of a system of 17 different public campuses which was chartered in 1789 which includes the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the first of its kind in the US to foster the growth of gifted high school students. The University of North Carolina System has nearly a quarter million students attending annually.

“This series will attract top speakers who draw students and faculty from throughout our region to the NC State campus,” said David C. Muddiman, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at NC State.  “We are so pleased with the commitment from Thermo Fisher Scientific to support this series.  They clearly recognize the profound impact measurement science has on driving our discovery and understanding of the world around us.

“Analytical science represents about 80% of the chemical and biological sciences and through this initiative, we will be able to educate countless students and faculty over the coming decades on the fundamentals and emerging areas in this field,” he continued.  “Merging innovation in contemporary measurement science, fostering collaborative inter-disciplinary science, and education will be the hallmarks of this new seminar series.”

“We’re very pleased to support this new lecture series,” said Iain Mylchreest, vice president of research and development for Thermo Fisher Scientific. “Only through the sharing of ideas and insights is it possible to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer, and the goals of this series align closely with those of our company.”

The inaugural event, to be held in 2015, and other details will be announced later in 2014.
