High-speed imaging of neuronal activity across entire Brain for the first time
Although the entire nervous system connectivity map of the nematode model organism, Caenorhabditis elegans, has been known for more than 25 years, it has not been possible to predict all functional connections underlying behaviour. Now, the Vaziri and Zimmer research groups in Vienna, Austria, have demonstrated a high-speed imaging technique that allows neuronal activity across the entire brain to be recorded simultaneously. Publishing in Nature Methods, Professor Alipasha Vaziri ascribes two key breakthroughs for their success in being the first to implement brain-wide imaging...
Data from leading antibody search engine CiteAb suggests that bioscience research in China is set to overtake the United States within the next five to ten years.
CiteAb spun out from the University of Bath in early February 2014. The company has a database containing over 1.8m antibodies from suppliers all over the world, and uses academic research citations to rank antibodies. This gives the company an overview of the amount of research being carried out in over 100 different countries. Founder of CiteAb, Dr Andrew Chalmers, said: “Our data highlights the number of academic research papers using antibodies that are produced by each country, and therefore acts as a fantastic indicator of bioscience research activity around the world. “The data we’ve pulled from CiteAb clearly shows that China is the big winner at the moment...

If you are looking for a new autoclave, some manufacturers will tell you that it is essential to have a drain, a compressor and a suitable power supply.
This is a common situation when looking to purchase a small autoclave for laboratory use - but how practical is it to locate your autoclave near a drain? Often autoclaves are benchtop mounted, or the preferred location (from an ergonomic perspective) is an area where no such facilities exist. For many autoclaves the solution can be far from practical: the building infrastructure may need alteration, or alternatively the autoclave ends up being positioned in a room that has the necessary drainage requirements, but is far from ideal. In addition, small autoclaves that require compressors in order to operate....
