The application of morphologically directed Raman spectroscopy to characterizing the component-specific particulate properties of the active components in a topical pharmaceutical cream is described in an application note from Malvern Instruments.
While it is relatively straightforward to determine the particle size distributions of the individual components of a drug formulation before they are formulated as a blend, doing so post-blending is more challenging. Now, the Morphologi G3-ID, which combines automated image analysis with Raman spectroscopy in a single instrument, enables component-specific particle size and shape distributions to be obtained from a blend. The results of this analysis can provide....

The 6850 UV/visible spectrophotometer is Jenway’s first double-beam instrument with a variable spectral bandwidth – of 5nm down to 0.5nm.
This new instrument has highly stable optics and is particularly well-suited for use in laboratories where compliance to multiple regulatory agencies is required. The double beam optics and two detectors measure the sample and reference simultaneously for optimum measurement accuracy and stability over long periods of time. The 6850 has a variable spectral bandwidth of 0.5nm, 1nm, 2nm, 4nm and 5nm, giving flexibility whilst ensuring compliance to European Pharmacopeia requirements. The narrow spectral bandwidth ensures improved resolution.
The High-Resolution Continuum Source AAS technology (HR-CS AAS) now also enables the detection of non-metals using an AAS instrument, the contrAA® from Analytik Jena.
Thanks to a Xenon lamp as continuous radiation source, any wavelength is available for measurement on the contrAA® - including molecular bands. By converting the non-metals into characteristic molecules, these can be detected using molecular absorption spectrometry (MAS). HR-CS MAS is a new robust method for the selective analysis of the individual non-metals in aqueous and organic solutions and directly in solids - independent of the type of chemical bonding...

The Gamma Scientific Laboratory (NVLAP Lab Code 200823-0) has been awarded accreditation by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program for IES LM-80: 2008.
IES LM-80 is an approved method for measuring lumen depreciation and maintenance of Solid State Lighting (LED) light sources, arrays and modules. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) developed the standard to provide an objective method to evaluate and compare LED components from different manufacturers. Lumen maintenance is the percentage of initial lumens that a light source maintains over a defined period of time. LM-80 measures the depreciation of lumens over a specific timeframe to determine the useful life of LED components.
Jenway’s new 73 series spectrophotometer range provides entry-level instruments with a narrower spectral bandwidth of 5nm and an improved absorbance range of –0.3 to 2.5A, all within an innovative space-saving design.
The design of the 73 series cleverly minimises the overall footprint of the instrument by incorporating the large graphical display into the instrument’s lid. The easy to read display is ideal for demonstrations and enables live spectrum and kinetics scans to be clearly viewed. The instruments have the additional option of an integral printer, for further space saving – an important benefit in situations, such as teaching laboratories, where bench space is at a premium.
