Over 70 scientists from 16 countries are due in Nottingham this week for the biennial Scientific Laboratory Show and Conference at the East Midlands Conference Centre on the University of Nottingham campus.

This is the largest gathering of leading academic and commercial scientific experts in the city for several years, for what has become an occasion of real scientific value for leading manufacturers and for visiting international delegates. The three-day event is organised by Nottingham-based Scientific Laboratory Supplies Ltd, in association with the Royal Society of Chemistry and is further recognition of the city’s growing influence in the UK’s life sciences business sector.

The international delegation will be hosted by Peter Chapman, Managing Director of Scientific Laboratory Supplies Ltd and Robin Hood at Nottingham Castle on the evening of Sunday 11 May and will spend Monday visiting some of the city’s most successful academic and commercial laboratories. On Tuesday 13 May, all delegates and guests attend the Gala Dinner at the De Vere Orchard Hotel which precedes the Scientific Laboratory Show and Royal Society of Chemistry Conference on Wednesday 14 May. This year the Conference will focus on the latest developments in Innovation and Technology and will feature a full day of talks, interactive sessions and one to one specialist guidance on health and safety issues in laboratories. The RSC Conference will be hosted by scientist and broadcaster Vivienne Parry OBE.

Scientific Laboratory Supplies has doubled its export trade in the last two years and enjoys a particularly strong presence in Nigeria. Over 20 Nigerian guests are due to fly in for the Show and include the vice-chancellors of the University of Ilorin, Landmark University and Federal State University as well as the deputy vice chancellor of the University of Lagos. Together with senior research colleagues, they will be in Nottingham to learn more about the UK’s success in commercialising medical and pharmaceutical R&D.

Noel Connolly, International Sales Manager for SLS has spent some considerable time in Nigeria building relations with the leading universities and Government: He says: “There is enormous potential to work with our Nigerian colleagues by providing the infrastructure and equipment they need to build their life science capabilities, especially in the agricultural, veterinary  and medical fields. Nottingham attracts a significant number of Nigerian Masters and PhD students to study here, so through our African and Nottingham offices we have a role in helping build and maintain relations.”

Peter Lister, Operations Director at SLS says: “This biennial showcase once again provides a truly international networking opportunity of real significance. With leading industry manufacturers, academics and entrepreneurs gathering under one roof, we hope the event will prove memorable, educational and, above all, enjoyable.”

The Scientific Laboratory Show & Conference is in part sponsored by Thermo Scientific and also marks the launch of the 2014 SLS Catalogue when manufacturers and suppliers have access to SLS sales personnel for training and product awareness.
