The application of morphologically directed Raman spectroscopy to characterizing the component-specific particulate properties of the active components in a topical pharmaceutical cream is described in an application note from Malvern Instruments.
While it is relatively straightforward to determine the particle size distributions of the individual components of a drug formulation before they are formulated as a blend, doing so post-blending is more challenging. Now, the Morphologi G3-ID, which combines automated image analysis with Raman spectroscopy in a single instrument, enables component-specific particle size and shape distributions to be obtained from a blend. The results of this analysis can provide....

Diffuse Reflectance Imaging validated for early non-invasive detection of malignant and pre-malignant tumours
A team of Indian cancer researchers led by Dr Narayanan Subhash has developed a simple, non-invasive spectral imaging system that holds out the possibility of rapid, inexpensive mass screening for oral cancers in dental and clinical settings. Even in the hands of non-clinical staff, it is capable of real-time discrimination of healthy oral tissue from pre-malignant and malignant tissues with accuracy comparable to the gold standard histopathology of a biopsy sample....
When adapting a fluorescent protein assay from a confocal microscope to a microplate format, researchers no longer need filters thanks to new LVF Monochromators™ in the CLARIOstar® microplate reader from BMG LABTECH.
There are two options for filtering light into wavelengths when using a microplate reader. Filters offer higher performance thanks to greater light transmission and wider bandwidths; monochromators offer greater flexibility. Past research has stated that monochromators cannot perform many assays, due to the poor performance of monochromator-based readers. The main reason is the need for wider bandwidths, monochromators only have fixed or adjustable bandwidths up to 30 nm....

Resolve Optics has developed a variant of its Model 207 miniature motorised zoom lens enabling a manufacturer of remotely operated vehicles (ROV’s) to help improve the deep sea welding capability of their system.
Traditionally underwater welding repair to secure the integrity of pipes and other marine structures has been carried out by diving welders. To carry out such tasks these highly trained individuals face the perils of deep water and because of poor visibility welding joint quality has often been variable. For these reasons remotely operated vehicles have become increasingly popular for underwater welding projects....
