The largest study ever conducted on drug resistance in patients infected with Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) in Europe shows that half of patients in whom HBV is not fully suppressed by treatment harbor the drug-resistant virus.
This is because doctors in Europe are still prescribing old antiviral drugs, which may also cause resistance to modern compounds. The researchers reported these results in the latest issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases, published this week. According to the WHO, approximately 13 million people in Europe are chronically infected with the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). These patients often develop a severe form of liver inflammation...

The newly developed mass spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma from Analytik Jena, PlasmaQuant ® MS, provides ADD 10 — the all-digital detection technology covering 10 orders of magnitude linear dynamic range.
Equipped with advanced control technology the ADD 10 automatically dilutes signals up to 4 orders of magnitude electronically. This guarantees optimum signal detection independent from the concentration level of an element in the sample. The ADD 10 thus emphasizes the flexible and user-friendly concept of PlasmaQuant ® MS systems. In addition to that, this technology enables a previously unattained detector lifetime, thereby improving the...

A new technical poster produced by Genevac, in conjunction with the Novartis Institute for BioMedical Research (Horsham, UK), examines the application of eXalt™ evaporative crystallisation technology to drug discovery projects.
eXalt™ is a proprietary Genevac technology designed to control evaporation using restricting baffles. Using this technology multiple solvents can be screened in parallel to identify optimum crystallisation conditions for amorphous materials. In the pharmaceutical industry, physical form can pose a significant challenge for small molecule drug discovery projects transitioning between the optimisation and characterisation phases. A crystalline form is desirable...
