Lab3 was formed in June 2000 from the merger of Abinghurst Ltd. and SW Scientific Ltd and the acquisition of the laboratory supplies business of Labpak Ltd, hence the name. We operate from two sites, Bristol and Northampton, and employ around 50 people.
Our Bristol office houses the service and calibration part of our business, and a warehouse serving the South West of England and South Wales. Northampton is the location for the sales, purchasing and accounts functions, for our manufacturing facility and warehousing for the Midlands, Southern England, East Anglia and other areas.
Our Company can trace its origins back to 1978 when Abinghurst Ltd. was formed in Northampton by John Taylor, originally selling laboratory furniture, it quickly became obvious there was a demand in the local area for a supplier who could offer single-sourcing for laboratories, a concept that is well known today. At that time most of the laboratory suppliers around just sold one or two ranges of products rather than everything a laboratory needs. Abinghurst quickly grew and moved from a couple of offices over a shop in Northampton town centre to a warehouse two miles away. In 1991 we became one of the Merck primary dealers and in 1993 moved to our current premises in Ross Road. Since then we have built new offices and taken on the unit next door as part of our expansion.
S W Scientific was formed in Bristol in 1990, by John Short, when it was appointed a primary dealer by Merck Ltd. the major national laboratory supplier who closed its regional depots. The Company offered the full range of Merck products but specialised in supplying the food and dairy industries in the South West of England. Before long John started a servicing and repair business for laboratory equipment and added calibration to the range of services on offer, gaining UKAS accreditation in 1997.
Today Lab3 offers a wide range of goods and services to laboratories of all disciplines, from a few test tubes to complete laboratory installation, including capital equipment, instruments, consumables, chemicals, specially manufactured/packaged products, a full service and calibration facility with breakdown cover if required. Following the recent announcement that Lab3 is to re-introduce the popular Boxer range of autoclaves, the first models to be released by this specialist laboratory supplies company will make up part of a developing ECO range. As the model name suggests these are designed specifically to bring greater economies to steam sterilisation applications; since steam is only generated when an autoclave operation is required energy consumption and water requirements are significantly reduced...
