Is it Time for New Labware?
Labs around the world rely on plastic labware for its safety benefits and durability.
Due to its impact- resistant properties and light weight handling, plastic labware such as carboys, beakers, graduated cylinders, bottles, flasks and even desiccators are widely trusted as basic equipment in the majority of labs. Some pieces are so dependable, they tend to remain in use long after they show the tell tale signs of aging that should prompt replacement.
Aged plastic eventually becomes brittle, losing its protective elastic properties, making it prone to breakage. Labs should inspect plastic labware and reagent storage bottles before each use and replace pieces as they begin showing signs of aging:
- Discoloration not removed by washing: yellow, brown, orange or pink
- Crazing – spider web cracks
- Stress cracking – vertical cracks or those along bends or flex points
- Pitting and other permanent surface blemishes
If you look around your lab and notice pieces that are clearly very old and yellowed, it might be a good time to think about refreshing your lab with replacements.
