Copper Incubator Fights Contamination in a University of Liverpool Laboratory

A copper-lined incubator has been installed in the University of Liverpool’s Biological Sciences Department to help reduce the spread of bacteria associated with life science laboratory contamination.

antimicrobial copperCopper is a powerful antimicrobial with rapid, broad-spectrum efficacy against bacteria and viruses, including MRSA, E.coli and norovirus.  It shares this benefit with a range of copper alloys – such as brasses and bronzes – forming a family of materials collectively called ‘antimicrobial copper’.

John Jerger of Triple Red UK, who supplied and installed the NuAire incubator, explains: ‘Bacterial contamination was a particular concern for this client, so we supplied the incubator with a CuVerro® bactericidal copper lining.  Bacteria settling on the copper surfaces will be continuously killed off, working in conjunction with HEPA filtration and a high temperature decontamination cycle to offer the cleanest possible surfaces.’

Touch surfaces made from solid antimicrobial copper are used by healthcare facilities and research laboratories around the world to reduce the spread of problematic pathogens, supporting key infection control measures such as good hand hygiene and frequent surface cleaning and disinfection.
