BWB Technologies Marks 20 Years of Flame Photometry Innovation
BWB Technologies is proud to celebrate its 20th anniversary this month, marking two decades of excellence in flame photometry.
From its beginnings as a British start-up to becoming a globally recognised name in elemental analysis, BWB’s journey reflects a legacy of scientific advancement, product innovation, and trusted partnerships.
Founded in 2005 by Gary Bukamier, the Newbury-based business set out to simplify elemental analysis through intuitive, reliable instrumentation. That vision came to life in 2007 with the launch of the BWB-1, the first flame photometer to offer simultaneous multi-element detection with user-friendly controls.
Since then, BWB has released over a dozen models across nine generations, including specialist instruments such as the BIO-AV, Sugar, SOIL, and Nuclear models. Today, its technology supports research applications in environmental monitoring, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and food production, with instruments in use across more than 100 countries.
A major milestone in BWB’s technical evolution was the introduction of its Automatic Fluid Handling System (AFHS), available with all of the origin series models. This innovation marked the first reliable automation of the flame photometry process, delivering fast, precise sample handling without reliance on AI or cloud-based systems. The company’s acquisition of Rank Brothers in 2022 further expanded its capabilities in dissolved oxygen measurement and magnetic stirring.
Sustainability remains central to BWB’s operations. As an ISO 14001 certified and ISO 50005 compliant company, BWB has committed to a 90% reduction in emissions by 2030. Its partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects has resulted in over 31,000 trees planted to date. These efforts, alongside recyclable packaging and an ethical supply chain, have earned BWB accolades including the UK Company Culture Award for Best ESG Programme and a Gold CSR Excellence Award. To reinforce transparency in its sustainability efforts and provide additional reassurance to its customers, the business is currently undergoing assessment for B-Corp accreditation.
To mark its 20th year, BWB is supporting Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) with a donation funding 200 blood bags for emergency surgery and trauma care, reflecting the company’s values of compassion and global responsibility.
Managing Director Hozan Edwards, who began his career at BWB in 2012, leads the company with a hands-on approach and a commitment to purposeful innovation.
“It’s been a privilege to grow with BWB over the years. I’ve always believed in making instruments that are practical, reliable, and genuinely useful and I’m proud of what the team has achieved with the help of our global network of partners. Their dedication to the business and to each other is second to none. I’m grateful to have built a team that not only drives the business forward, but makes BWB a great place to work.” — Hozan Edwards, Managing Director, BWB Technologies
BWB’s anniversary also coincides with its continued presence at ArabLab 2025 in Dubai, taking place from 23rd to 25th September. The company has exhibited annually for over a decade and looks forward to connecting with partners and customers at its stand.
