Aesthetics in research: The Starlab Minicentrifuge wins Instrument Business Outlook’s Bronze Award for Industrial Design
Can a device that is used in the laboratory every day be both functional and visually appealing?
The laboratory equipment manufacturer Starlab International addressed this question a year ago when it launched its completely redesigned minicentrifuge. According to the many scientists and laboratory technicians who have since enjoyed the visual appearance and improved usability of the device, the answer to that question is ‘yes’. The expert jury of the prestigious Instrument Business Outlook (IBO) also rewarded Starlab with the bronze award in this year's Industrial Design Awards for the innovative industrial design of its Starlab Minicentrifuge. “This award recognizes our commitment to high-quality products paired with innovative design. It is an incentive for us to continue with this approach”, explains Stefanie Josewski, Head of Product Managament at Starlab International GmbH.
The IBO’s expert panel singled out the Starlab Minicentrifuge for its outstanding visual design, user-friendliness and innovative functionality. In addition to its external values, the minicentrifuge also impressed the jury with its internal values – it has the perfect balance of compact size and precise performance. Stefanie Josewski: “People still underestimate the importance of aesthetics and the potential of good design in the laboratory industry. Design doesn't merely follow function. It has a significant impact on functionality and, not least, on the enjoyment experienced when working with the product. This leads to better results in research and science.”
The IBO (Industrial Business Outlook) trade publication based in the United States has been presenting the IBO Industrial Design Awards for more than twenty years. This year, IBO, which specializes in reporting on laboratory products and companies, evaluated the design of over 50 analytical instruments and laboratory equipment technologies. The selection criteria include the visual appearance, aesthetics, appeal and originality of the design, as well as the functionality and usability enabled by the design. The awards are issued independently. Nomination is not required in order to be considered.
