Newly Developed Bioactive Protein Surfaces for Cell Culture Applications

Orla Protein Technologies has developed an expanded range of cell culture surfaces that mimic natural interactions and provide reliable and consistent growth media for assay development, biomedical and cell biology applications.

orla proteinThe technology uses specially engineered animal and xeno-free proteins, carefully engineered to mimic specific extracellular matrix components (laminins, vitronectin, collagen, and many more), growth factors (such as FGF, EGF and others) and numerous other proteins that control cell behaviour.

Developed using the patented OrlaSURF technology, traditional limitations in the manufacture and immobilisation of proteins on surfaces have been overcome, thus improving protein presentation, functionality and durability. Surface manufacture using OrlaSURF is a simple, one-step protocol making it efficient, scalable and cost effective.  The process also enables the creation of customised mixed protein surfaces for defined cell culture applications.

As a result, Orla surfaces provide consistent growth platforms capable of providingpredictable and reproducible cell growth and differentiation. The platform offers unmatched scalability and cost effectiveness.  By reducing the need to add expensive soluble components large savings can also be made on the cost of culture media.

One example application attracting strong commercial interest is the culture of induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC’s).   In this case a specific Orla protein surface allows scientists to culture hiPSC using the same materials at the laboratory and the industrial scale, providing unparalleled consistency and continuity of development.

Any combination of Orla’s advanced animal-free proteins can be used to produce highly customised surfaces (on laboratory glass and plasticware, gold analytical biochips, TiO2 etc) for precise assay development, cell biology, regenerative medicine and large-scale cell culture applications. Proteins can be supplied as pre-coated polystyrene labware or as a stable solution for application in the users facility. Precise spatial printing is also achievable.
