Leicester is a major centre of biomedical discovery and clinical translational research – particularly in the fields of structural biology, genetics, diabetes, cardiovascular science and respiratory disease. Leicester has established two major research institutes: the Leicester Precision Medicine Institute and the Leicester Institute of Structural and Chemical Biology.
These research institutes are an integral part of the discovery-led research at Leicester, uniting established research expertise, and have enabled research funding awards from research councils, major charities and industry partners to double in size and number. In particular, Leicester's excellence in research was reflected in the award of a National Institutes of Health Research Biomedical Research Centre with our NHS partner, University Hospitals of Leicester.
The University’s Centre for Medicine is the largest investment in medical teaching and applied research by a UK university in the last decade. Acting as a hub to bring together, for the first time, the University’s leading academics, researchers, clinicians and students, previously spread across multiple sites in the city; the new Centre will improve the lives of many patients in the region and beyond.
Leicester’s Medical School has a commitment to providing the very best medical education, that mirrors the research endeavour. The launch an innovative and exciting new curriculum has been accompanied by a foundation course to widen participation and enlarge the base of students that are recruited from.
Professor Philip Baker, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology, said: “With over 2,600 medical schools in the world, to be ranked in the top 50 is quite remarkable and a great vindication of the recent innovative work that has been taking place at Leicester. It reflects the high calibre of our academic research and educational missions and it is gratifying that the Shanghai Ranking ranks us above many of our prominent peers.”
