The TrayCell – Getting to the smaller details of photometry

The Jenway Genova Nano Micro-Volume UV/Visible Spectrophotometer is the perfect go-to spectrophotometer for scientists who frequently work with small volume samples.

This rapid and accurate system minimises losses of precious samples while reducing the need for dilutions and the requirement for cuvettes. The Jenway Genova Nano technology is ideal for nucleic acid researchers who undertake frequent purity and concentration measurements of micro-volumes (0.5µl).

Working with both macro and micro samples requires two different variants of spectrophotometer, which could be financially prohibitive. Ultra-micro volume cuvettes are available, accommodating sample volumes as little as 20ul, however achieving reproducible results and the recovery of clean samples is often challenging.

A more effective approach, if the sample is of a sufficient concentration, is to use a TrayCell.

The TrayCell is a fiber-optic, ultra-micro cell designed for measurements of extremely small sample volumes of DNA, RNA or protein (0.7µl), with sample concentrations ranging from 25 to 4250µg/ml. The dimensions of the TrayCell are equivalent to a standard 10mm path length cuvette and so will fit in all Jenway spectrophotometers and micro-cuvette holders. Although the TrayCell has this versatility, it is recommended that it is used in combination with a Jenway Genova Bio Life Science Spectrophotometer, which is pre-programmed for DNA, RNA and protein analysis.

An additional benefit of the TrayCell is that it is compatible with various changeable caps. These are specifically designed so that the user can choose a specific light path length, depending on the sample. The product is supplied with two caps, which create a ‘virtual dilution’ of 1:10 and 1:50 of the sample, with two further caps available to enable dilutions of 1:5 and 1:100.

Both the TrayCell and the caps are reusable, as samples can be easily wiped away or recovered. Therefore, when combined with a Jenway Genova Bio Life Science Spectrophotometer, this is a cost-effective, versatile and easy-to-use photometry solution.
