A MANTECH AssayPlus™ system with an Automax™ 122 sampler is helping scientists at NRM Laboratories in Swaffham, Norfolk, carry out specialist soil analyses.
As Section Head Rob Thurley explained: “Our analyses involve measurement of pH and elements such as phosphorus, potassium and magnesium, providing an indication of the type and amount of fertiliser required to optimise the condition of agricultural land. Previously, pH was measured using a hand-held pH meter, recording the data manually. This required a dedicated member of staff and was very time consuming. Automation streamlines the process, allowing more samples to be processed in less time.”
Read MoreWhy our Summers are Getting Wetter: Scientists give Long-term Perspective for Unsettled British SummersAug 4, 2015
Scientists studying the regional climate have discovered the reason why British summers are getting wetter.
The study, published in the International Journal of Climatology, and led by Liverpool John Moores University’s (LJMU’s) Dr Tom Matthews has provided context for the region’s recent wash-out summers. The experts have assessed 142-year record of storms for the British-Irish Isles. Compared to earlier decades (around the 1960s-1980s), the researchers found that summers in the UK and Ireland have become much wetter as a result of more...

Dr David Suggett and his team at the University of Technology, Sydney have been using a Chelsea Technologies Group FastOcean to monitor coastal health along the East coast of Australia. “Primary productivity of the coastal ocean directly influences drawdown of atmospheric CO2 and fuels fisheries,” said Dr Suggett....
“Conditions that regulate primary productivity are highly variable along the east coast and we have been using the FastOcean to better understand the control of nutrient availability on carbon fixation in waters off the coast of Sydney; we have been adopting novel incubation approaches to better predict CO2 uptake capacity from FastOcean determined ‘electron transport rates’ within these waters. These data will feed into predictive models of...

Tecan’s Infinite® M1000 PRO multimode reader has helped liquid analysis specialist Aqsens to develop a portable testing platform for on-site quantitative monitoring of polymeric scale inhibitors in oil field-produced waters.
Joonas Siivonen, Application Scientist at Aqsens, explained: “Polymeric scale inhibitors are used to prevent scale build-up during oil production, and the residual levels in the oil field-produced waters must be monitored to ensure treatment is effective and the oil platform can be operated safely. Using a patented detection technology combining time-resolved fluorescence (TRF) with chemical modulators, we have developed a portable system – the Aqsens QS platform – to offer a fast, accurate means of monitoring residual scale inhibitors on site.”....

Spectro Scientific, a leading developer and manufacturer of analytical tools and software for fluid and machine condition monitoring, has introduced the MiniLab 53 on-site oil analysis system.
This product is a result of new development from intellectual property rights Spectro acquired from Emerson Process Management in 2012 -- specifically the CSI 5200 Machinery Health Oil Analyzer. Designed for use by industrial plant personnel, the MiniLab 53 combines multiple tests in one unit to monitor lubricant chemistry, contamination and machinery wear. As corrosion and wear are the root causes of most mechanically-induced...
The recently-published ASTM method D7861 for measuring biodiesel blend ratios enables users to take full advantage of the speed, convenience and durability provided by portable infrared analyzers from Wilks - a Spectro Scientific Company.
Traditional ASTM D7371 and EN 14078 methods for measuring biodiesel blends require the use of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometers, equipment that is expensive and requires a level of technical knowledge to operate accurately. The new ASTM method D7861 certifies the use of portable filter-based infrared analyzers, such as the Wilks InfraSpec VFA-IR Spectrometer, that are rugged, compact and much better suited...
New results in the rapidly advancing study of microbial ecology
In the last decade, the study of microbes in soil and water has advanced through new DNA technology. Through this, studies of marine waters have found many types of astonishingly rare bacteria in the oceans - the so called ?rare biosphere.? Now, researchers from Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Urban Environment have turned their attention to the rare biosphere of freshwater...
The latest addition to the Hygiena line of rapid micro-organism tests is InSite Salmonella, which is a rapid and convenient colorimetric Salmonella species test for environmental surfaces.
Its all-in-one test format contains both the pre-enrichment and selective enrichment procedures, maintains security and minimises the risk of cross contamination. It also retains the active culture for any subsequent verification and identification tests. InSite Salmonella is a self-contained, ready-to-use swab test which contains a specialised liquid medium which changes colour when Salmonella species are present in the sample...
A new series of environmental test chambers now available from Tovatech in 4 storage capacities from 24 to 80 cubic feet feature ultrasonic humidifiers producing far smaller water particles than centrifugal humidifiers.
The ultrasonic humidifiers are placed above rather than inside storage cabinets thereby freeing space for additional test specimens. Dehumidification is handled by a separate latent coil. Both systems are operated by a programmable logic microprocessor controller. The ultrasonic humidifiers require water with low mineral content delivered at 10 to 60 psi. As a means of conserving this water an optional purification system for tap water is...
