Cape Town International Convention Centre, Cape Town, South Africa
The third biennial conference of the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM), which takes place in just under two months’ time, will bring together key players in the global health community to tackle some of the critical health challenges of our time. Attendees include African and international luminaries of the scientific community, government ministers and policy makers, private sector leaders, innovators, and funders and donors such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as representatives of multi-lateral organisations such as WHO and UNAIDS.
This year’s programme will focus on addressing major communicable disease epidemics such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, Ebola, and Zika, as well as prevalent chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. The high profile issue of antimicrobial resistance is also at the top of the agenda.
Confirmed speakers include: Dr. Matshidiso Moeti: WHO Regional Director for Africa; Dr. Eric Goosby, UN Special Envoy for Tuberculosis; Ambassador Deborah Birx: US Global AIDS Coordinator; Professor Keith Klugman: Director of Pneumonia, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Professor Rosanna Peeling, Chair of Diagnostics Research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; and Dr. Kevin De Cock, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Kenya.
Participants will share and discuss the latest scientific knowledge and technological advances with a view to generating innovative, collaborative approaches and practical, pragmatic solutions to address some of the greatest current and emerging threats to global health security. A central theme is the pivotal role that diagnostics and medical laboratories play in rapid disease detection, surveillance, and clinical care as well as research and development.
