Hydrogen Peroxide Vapour Recomended in Ebola Preparedness Protocols
Once again, as hospitals around the world are implementing Ebola preparedness protocols to deal with the outbreak safely and efficiently, the use of hydrogen peroxide vapour (HPV) for the decontamination of Ebola-exposed environments appears to be the preferred method.
A good example is Emory Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in Georgia, USA, which has set up an Ebola website to share its procedures and protocols. The protocols reference HPV several times among other important steps of care.
Bioquell’s 35% HPV system has already successfully been used in the USA, UK, France and the Netherlands for the disinfection of rooms or ambulances that have been used to treat Ebola patients. Hydrogen peroxide vapour is the gold standard for efficacy. It has the ability to eliminate all pathogens, including spores, from all surfaces. The improved efficacy of HPV has led to the most robust scientific evidence for reductions in infection rates. Numerous studies with prestigious institutions such as Johns Hopkins and Yale have shown HPV to reduce infection rates for spore forming pathogens like C.difficile and Gram negative pathogens such as Acinetobacter.
James Salkeld, Head of Healthcare at Bioquell, stresses, “Most Western countries are not accustomed with the triage and screening procedures related to Ebola. It is paramount that hospitals around the world set up protocols to prepare their staff. Hospitals should as well share good practices and advice to implement them. As such, HPV should be part of all Ebola preparedness protocols around the world. Bioquell is ready to assist them in containing the outbreak.”
