Six companies have recently signed tenancy agreements to locate within MediCity, the health, beauty and wellness innovation hub based in Nottingham.

This brings the total to eleven companies who have chosen to have a base in this part of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone in the recently refurbished building on the Boots site in Beeston.

The tenant companies cover a range of commercial activities including sports body-care, the manufacture of anti-ageing chewable vitamins, the development of apps for remote health monitoring, the development and printing of nanomaterials for high-performance applications across a range of industries, new healthcare brand marketing and intellectual property experts.

  • Natural Hero is a consumer sports and wellness brand consisting of muscle rub, soak and sports spray. Developed with plant scientists and physiotherapists, the natural products combat muscle fatigue and condition the skin. Following a serious skiing accident, founder Louise Vincent set about researching alternatives to synthetically-loaded sports body-care. MediCity will provide Natural Hero with access to Boots marketing advice and business development to help expand the brand’s reach.
  • Getto Healthcare is a new venture aimed at bringing anti-ageing chewable vitamins and unique food supplements to market. Manufactured on site, the supplement incorporates healthy ingredients like goya and particularly extract of getto plant, which is commonly eaten with rice and drank in tea by the Japanese. Getto Healthcare has developed the formulation for the products in partnership with Japanese Scientists and under the Okinawa Program and advice of Dr Makoto Suzuki, MD PHD, Professor Emeritus, Cardiologist and Geriatrician, Chairman of the Okinawa Research Centre for Longevity Science.
  • Pousache is a healthcare product consultancy under the direction of biochemist and innovator Saneth Wijayaratna. Finding new ways to personalise healthcare has led Saneth to work with partners around the world including Nihon University in Japan and University College London. His academic post with the Institute of Cardiovascular Science at UCL is helping to develop new remote patient monitoring solutions which will gather data from various sources to be stored remotely [in the Cloud]. MediCity will provide the consultancy with business development support.
  • Nano Products Ltd incorporates nanosilver, nanographene and carbon inks in the printing of conductive electrodes onto thin plastic sheets. Owned by parent company West Yorkshire Printing Company Limited, Nano Products is taking space in MediCity to develop its technology for use by medical device and healthcare diagnostics manufacturers, contract research organisations and developers of anti-counterfeiting systems for pharmaceuticals, tobacco products, spirits and drinks. Access to the facilities and skills at Nottingham Trent University’s School of Science and Technology through the ERDF-funded iSMART project is a further reason for Nano Product's choice of MediCity as its base.
  • www.weareMAD.co.ukis a health and beauty brand development and marketing venture. The company will focus on bringing new technologies to market, initially in five distinct areas of female hygiene, vitamins, mouthcare, skincare and sleep. MediCity is currently assisting the founders with pre-start up business advice and funding support through the Next Business Generation programme.
  • IP Asset LLP is an intellectual property agency with offices in Oxford, Bath, Cambridge and London. The team works with major clients such as Boots UK, as well as start-up firms, to identify and protect patentable ideas. As patent attorneys, lawyers and licensing experts, IP Asset works to create and extract a commercial return for their clients from these ideas. MediCity tenants will be invited to free IP training and guidance sessions as well as informal clinics.

David Browning, Director of MediCity, says: “With eleven tenant companies signed up we are reaching the first critical mass where entrepreneurs start to work together and share their connections. This is how new ventures go from drawing board to boardroom; and with MediCity expertise as well as access to Boots marketing intelligence, tenants can achieve growth much faster than if they start out alone.”

Mark Chivers, Enterprise Zone Director, Alliance Boots, says: “We are thrilled to formally welcome these six new tenants to MediCity. This ‘wave’ of new tenants brings some stimulating new product and business innovations, and together with BioCity, we are excited by the opportunity to accommodate these companies and work in assisting the future development of the health, beauty and wellness market in Nottingham, the UK and beyond.”

Support for the early stage businesses based at MediCity is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
