World Scientific Responds To Radiation Contamination

publication date: Mar 30, 2011
 |
author/source: World Scientific

world scientificFollowing concerns over radiation contamination arising from the problems with the nuclear reactors in Japan, international publisher World Scientific sent out an email message earlier today to all its customers with a link to download a free PDF containing information on radiation protection.

Extracted from one of its published medical textbooks, the PDF addresses the immediate procedures taken by nuclear/radioactive research laboratories and clinics in the event of an accident and steps that the general public can also follow. For example, in the event of the occurrences of a leakage, the spread of contamination should be prevented by going through the following steps: closing the doors and windows, turning off the fans, air-conditioners and other ventilation, locking the door and if airborne material is involved, sealing edges with tape. It also deals with decontamination methods which can be easily applied.

Mr Max Phua, Executive Director of World Scientific said, "Following the disaster in Japan, we felt that it was important for us to play our part in disseminating content that is relevant to both the public and researchers in the area of nuclear energy and radiation. Earlier on, we had disseminated information on how to survive from a tsunami and based on the overwhelming number of downloads, we are certain that people are in great need of such content in times like this so that they are informed. We hope that people will find this information helpful to them."

Members of the public can find the PDF at http://www.worldscibooks.com/cgi-bin/campaign.cgi?id=radiation6409. World Scientific has also granted researchers working on the radiation effects free access to relevant journal papers made available at http://www.worldscibooks.com/engineering/nuclear_radiation.html. Further information on Tsunami survival can be downloaded from http://www.worldscibooks.com/cgi-bin/campaign.cgi?id=tsunami7345.
