Thermo Fisher Scientific has developed a high-performance liquid chromatography (LC) method that simplifies determination of clenbuterol, ractopamine, and phenolethanolamine in meat using on-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) and ultraviolet absorbance detection.

Application Brief (AB) 154: Rapid and Sensitive Determination of Clenbuterol, Ractopamine, and Phenolethanolamine in Meatdemonstrates that this method, performed using a dual rapid separation LC system controlled by data management software, achieves method detection limits equivalent to those obtained by mass spectrometry (MS). Additionally, this approach offers the advantages of full automation, the absence of operator influence, time savings, and strict process control.

Clenbuterol, ractopamine, and phenolethanolamine—substances that have been extensively used as growth stimulants in farm animals and by athletes seeking enhanced performance—can cause adverse side effects in humans. As a result, these substances have been banned as a food/feed additive in many countries. Food safety regulators need an efficient way to test for clenbuterol, ractopamine, and phenolethanolamine in meat. The AB 154 on-line SPE approach provides a cost-effective solution.fruit producers have a rapid and reliable way to monitor the condition of their soil.
